Stolen Bike?

Question

Scottie asked: I have a bike I just got and it has a serial number sticker on the bottom. How can I check to see if the bike was stolen or not?

Answer

A few communities require registration of bicycles. If your community does that, you would need to find out the requirements. The only one I know of is Daytona Beach.

In any event, you could check with the local police to see if it was reported as stolen by the owner

  1. Listening to police scanner, I’ve learned that even though a bicycle may not have been registered, it can be reported as stolen, via serial number. The state database would have information specific to that bicycle if it has been reported stolen, regardless of registration status. Local law enforcement should have access to that information, as Geo suggests.
