Question

Wayne asked: None of my lights are working on my e-bike. Can I still operate it?

Answer

Lights and reflectors are required on bicycles during nighttime and inclement weather. During good daylight weather, they are not required.

If your ebike meets the statutory definition of a bicycle, it is a bicycle and the same laws apply.

s. 316.003 – Definitions

(2) Bicycle – Every vehicle propelled solely by human power, and every motorized bicycle propelled by a combination of human power and an electric helper motor capable of propelling the vehicle at a speed of not more than 20 miles per hour on level ground upon which a person may ride, having two tandem wheels, and including any device generally recognized as a bicycle though equipped with two front or two rear wheels. The term does not include such a vehicle with a seat height of no more than 25 inches from the ground when the seat is adjusted to its highest position or a scooter or similar device.

s. 316.2065 – Bicycle Regulations

(7) Every bicycle in use between sunset and sunrise shall be equipped with a lamp on the front exhibiting a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and a lamp and reflector on the rear each exhibiting a red light visible from a distance of 600 feet to the rear.

s. 316.217 – When Lighted Lamps are Required

(1) Every vehicle operated upon a highway within this state shall display lighted lamps and illuminating devices …. under the following conditions;

(b) During any rain, smoke, or fog.
