Motorized Bikes

Question

Dale asked: It seems like there is no correct answer about riding a motorized bike in Florida. I have checked a few sites and no straight up answer. I see them a lot down on front Street. I even asked a State Trooper and he said he didn’t believe that there is a law saying that you can’t ride them on the streets. And there are a couple of highways you can go on.

Really would like to find out the truth. I am 54 years old and in the heat it would be so convenient for me.

Answer

There is indeed an answer to your question even if the FHP officer didn’t know it.

A bike with an electric assist motor may be operated on the roads without registration or a driver’s license if it meets this statutory definition of bicycle.

A bike with a gas assist motor must be registered as a moped and the operator must have a driver’s license.
