Bikes May Use Full Lane 2

Question

Herman asked:  The concept that has been discussed in the media.  What I would like to know is, what exactly is the statue that covers this?

Answer

BMUFL signs that are posted are normally for lanes that are too narrow for a bicycle and a motor vehicle to travel safely side by side, a substandard-width lane.  However, those signs are few and are not the only times when cyclists may use the full lane.  There many exceptions to the “keep right” or bike lanes rules.  Whenever not required to “keep right”, the cyclist may legally use the full lane.

See the posts in the “substandard-width lane”, “lane position”, and “bike lane” tags for full information.

This post describes one case in which BMUFL signs are posted.

  1. Age is not a factor in the law, other than the requirement for helmets. See the posts in the tag clouds for “Two Abreast” and “impeding traffic”..
