Bicycle Identification

Question

Michael asked: Am I legally obligated or required produce or show my bicycle’s identification and/or serial number to a law enforcement officer if detained/”pulled over” for a bicycle violation? I understand I will be required to identify myself.

Answer

Your question is asking for legal advice which we do not provide on this site. You should seek the advice of an attorney to be sure of your rights and duties in such a case.

I will venture a couple of instances that you might want to consider.

Some communities have local ordinances that require bicycle registration.  In those cases, I would think a law enforcement could ask for the registration of the bicycle.

In another situation, an officer having probable cause to believe the bicycle is stolen or otherwise involved in a criminal act could probably require the bicycle to be identified.
