Stop Sign in a Private Community

Question

CJ asked: I live in a housing area with private streets (i.e., we pay for the maintenance of our sidewalks and streets.) We have stop signs. Are bicyclists in our area required to follow Florida law, like stopping at stop signs?

Answer

Drivers must obey all traffic control devices, including stop signs.

s. 316.074Obedience to and Required Traffic Control Devices

(1) The driver of any vehicle shall obey the instructions of any official traffic control device applicable thereto ….

Whether the laws are enforced by local police in your community depends on the arrangement made between your board of directors and local law enforcement. See this post.
