Additional Lights

Question

Daniel asked: There are lots of different decorative lights for bicycles sold at Walmart and Target, lights that go on your tire, lights that go under your seat and Anya handlebars, different colors just for decoration knowing you need a white light in the front and a red light in the back. Are all of the lights acceptable?

Answer

Lights in addition to the required white light forward and a red light and reflector to the rear are allowed except that blue lights are prohibited and no red light shall show forward. See these posts and others under the subtitle “Bicycle Equipment”.

  1. A great resource. I recently purchased some LED lights for my motorbike from an online store called Clandes Motards but it didn’t fit my bike properly, hence I was thinking of getting it mounted on my bicycle. The lights fit my bicycle well. I was just wondering whether it is allowed as per law or not.

  2. Tracey,
If your motor bike meets the statutory definition of bicycle and the lights meet the requirements for bicycles or are additional lights, they will be satisfactory.
    s. 316.003 – Definitions
    (2) Bicycle – Every vehicle propelled solely by human power, and every motorized bicycle propelled by a combination of human power and an electric helper motor capable of propelling the vehicle at a speed of not more than 20 miles per hour on level ground upon which any person may ride, having two tandem wheels, and including any device generally recognized as a bicycle though equipped with two front or two rear wheels.
    s. 316.2065 – Bicycle Regulations
    (7) Every bicycle in use between sunset and sunrise shall be equipped with a lamp on the front exhibiting a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and a lamp and reflector on the rear each exhibiting a red light visible from a distance of 600 feet to the rear. A bicycle or its rider may be equipped with lights or reflectors in addition to those required by this section.
If your motor bike is not a motorized bicycle per the Bicycle Regulations and is a moped, motorcycle or other motorized vehicle, the requirements are different, and are beyond the scope of this site. See the dealer for the requirements.
