A sidewalk is not a bike lane. It is not a lane. The bike lane is part of the roadway. HB 971 only refers to bicyclists in the roadway.

There is no authorized sign with the wording you mentioned. It sounds like one of the old signs that was easily misunderstood. The approved signs say "Bicycle Lane" and are only used for marked bike lanes.

You might want to address this situation with your local Bicycle /Pedestrian Advisory Committee or other county officials.

Also, it might be worthwhile talking to the police department or Sheriff's Office for clarification. Please advise if you need more information.

In Englewood, Florida we have a sidewalk that runs along the road leading to the beach. There is no bike lane on this two lane road. The sidewalk is separated from the roadway by parking bumpers. There is a sign in this area that says: "Bicycles only in right lane." It is obvious that the sign is referring to the sidewalk.

Earlier this year I posted to this site about an officer who told my wife and I that we were required to use the sidewalk. He was of course wrong, but now that this new bill is law, I am betting that he will try to enforce it as requiring us to use the sidewalk, and I'm not sure he isn't right. Comments?

I must say it gets very tiresome having to defend your rights time after time.
